neuron: ganglion cells of the retina - n. II
- chiasma opticum - corpus geniculatum laterale
neuron: cells in the corpus geniculatum laterale
- tractus geniculocorticalis (= radiatio optica Gratioleti) - lobus
ocipitalis, area 17 (around the sulcus calcarinus)
Branching off the visual pathway
(all branches leave 3rd neuron)
to hypothalamus (nucleus suprachiasmaticus) - it conveys visual signals
to the higest vegetative centres ("if you notice the food, you strart
to salivate")
pathways of the pupillary reflex - via area pretectalis
to nucleus accessorius dorsalis n. III /Edinger-Westphal/
- parasympathetic tract together with the n. III - ganglion ciliare - nn.
ciliares breves - m. ciliaris et m. spihncter pupillae /miosis + acomodation/
to reticular formation - tractus reticulospinalis - centrum
ciliospinale /Budge/ C8-Th1 - via sympathetic tract in the
truncus symphaticus - ganglion cervicale superius - plexus caroticus internus
et ophtalmicus - nn. ciliares breves - m. dilatator pupillae /mydriasis/
pathway for convergation - nucleus intersticialis /Cajal/
- fasciculus longitudinalis medialis - nuclei of n. III., IV. and VI.
tectal visual circle - tractus tectospinalis (control of
eye, head and neck muscles synkinesis towards visual impluses, coordination
with general movements of the whole body)
The arrows indicate places of possible damage to the visual pathway and successive
disturbance.
