VISUAL PATHWAY

(4 - neuron partly crossed pathway)

  1. neuron: rods and cones of the retina
  2. neuron: bipolar cells of the retina
  3. neuron: ganglion cells of the retina - n. II - chiasma opticum - corpus geniculatum laterale
  4. neuron: cells in the corpus geniculatum laterale - tractus geniculocorticalis (= radiatio optica Gratioleti) - lobus ocipitalis, area 17 (around the sulcus calcarinus)

Branching off the visual pathway (all branches leave 3rd neuron)

  1. to hypothalamus (nucleus suprachiasmaticus) - it conveys visual signals to the higest vegetative centres ("if you notice the food, you strart to salivate")
  2. pathways of the pupillary reflex - via area pretectalis
  3. tectal visual circle - tractus tectospinalis (control of eye, head and neck muscles synkinesis towards visual impluses, coordination with general movements of the whole body)

The arrows indicate places of possible damage to the visual pathway and successive disturbance.
